THE RADAERO CONCEPT
The aim of the project is to develop, through a highly interdisciplinary collaboration between academic and industrial actors in the fields of mechanical, aeronautical, electrical and materials engineering, an innovative, lightweight, combined composite material with thin surface coatings, suitable for UAV aeronautical applications. The resulting combined material will meet the target requirements for:
- Reduced weight, while maintaining high resistance to mechanical stresses.
- Reduced mechanical friction of the air with the external surfaces of the UAV, providing low aerodynamic drag and thus increasing its autonomy.
- Controlled response to electromagnetic radiation with emphasis on increasing absorption to achieve reduced tracking during UAV operations.
The above objectives can be achieved by using composites as the base material, the application of riblet geometries to improve aerodynamic performance and artificial periodic microstructures of MMA to reduce RCS. The resulting material is investigated on a UAV model reference platform, which is based on the MALE HCUAV RX-1 UAV.
